Post Operative Spine Recovery Program

Post Operative Spine Recovery Program

Foundation Physiotherapy & Wellness is a leader in evidence-based practice physiotherapy.. Our distinct rehabilitative program for clients following their spine (lumbar, thoracic and cervical) surgery was designed by advanced physiotherapists and neurosurgeons who have over 30 years of experience managing spinal conditions.

Understanding that each client has unique goals to return to, our post-operative spine recovery program provides an individualized assessment and plan of care to each client.

Long walks? Golfing? Working from home and needing to sit 8 hours/day? Picking up your kids or grandkids? Quality of life? Based on what you want to achieve following surgery, we will develop an individualized recovery plan that incorporates movements required for your specific daily life.

What does a general recovery program look like?

Expect 8-12 weeks following your surgery for recovery. Your physiotherapy program will consist of the following stages:

  • Improving range of motion to improve daily living activities such as walking, bending, turning, etc.
  • Improving strength to improve higher load activities such as carrying, lifting, prolonged postures. etc.
  • Improving stability and endurance to tolerate prolonged positions and repetitive movements.
  • Functional Strengthening to return to your specific activity.

What happens at Foundation Physiotherapy?

Your treatment plan is unique and may consist of a combination of the following:

  • Manual therapy: Techniques such as joint mobilizations, soft tissue techniques, muscle energy techniques, neural flossing and others are used to improve pain and range of motion, stimulate blood flow and improve nerve response.
  • Exercises: What’s physiotherapy without exercise? You will be provided specific exercises based on your stage of recovery. Exercises can consist of mobility, active and passive stretching, resistance training, core and deep neck muscle activation.
  • Other modalities may be used based on your needs. These modalities can include acupuncture, taping and muscle stimulation.
  • Self-Management techniques: foam rolling, massage tools and muscle stimulation devices can be purchased to improve recovery between sessions.
  • Wellness: Recovery is lifelong. Maintenance of your results is important following your recovery. You are welcome to continue your Foundation experience through personal training, pelvic health, massage therapy, chiropractic, naturopathic medicine, or psychotherapy at any time.
