3 Tips for eliminating hip/lower back pain during pregnancy

If you’re pregnant and experiencing hip or lower back pain, you are not alone! Joint aches and pains are definitely common during pregnancy, and can make walking, standing, sitting and sleeping uncomfortable. But just because these symptoms are common, they should not be considered a “normal” part of pregnancy.

If you are experiencing any hip or lower back pain, try implementing these three simple strategies for sitting, standing and sleeping:

  1. Sit with your knees wider than your hips. Avoid sitting with your legs crossed above your knees — try crossing them at your ankles instead.
  2. When you’re standing, keep a slight bend in your knees and focus on keeping your weight distributed evenly between both feet. Avoid slouched standing, standing with one hip higher than the other, or standing with your knees locked.
  3. Sleep on your side with a pillow between your knees. The pillow should be thick enough so that it keeps your knees hip width apart.

These three positions all help to reduce strain on your pelvis and hips, and after a few days of being diligent you may notice that you are quickly starting to feel better. If your hip or lower back pain is more severe, or does not resolve within a couple of days, don’t wait until after your baby is born.
