What is cerebral palsy?

WebMD defines cerebral palsy as “a group of disorders that affect balance, movement, and muscle tone. “Cerebral” means the disorder is related to the brain, and “palsy” refers to weakness or a muscle problem.”

People with cerebral palsy are typically born with the condition. This is called “congenital cerebral palsy,” however, cerebral palsy can also develop shortly after birth. In this case, it’s referred to as “acquired cerebral palsy.”

Cerebral palsy develops due to damage, trauma, or malformation of the brain. Premature babies are at a higher risk of developing cerebral palsy, as are those who develop severe jaundice or other illnesses/injuries that affect the brain during infancy.

There are a few causes for cerebral palsy, including, but not limited to the following:

  • The organs do not receive adequate blood flow
  • Seizures are commonly experienced after birth
  • Other genetic conditions
  • Traumatic brain injuries
