What is Multiple Sclerosis?
Multiple Sclerosis is defined as “a disease that involves the loss of myelin, a material that covers and protects the nerves in the body’s central nervous system. Without myelin, nerves cannot properly communicate with each other. Symptoms affect structures that control movement, sensation, and mental and emotional processes.”
This condition is chronic and progressive, and there is currently no known cure. MS typically is not fatal, however the complications it causes can vary frommoderate to severe. Many people with MS have difficulty with daily function, are at ahigher risk of falls, and struggle with their mobility.
Managing MS alone can be difficult. At Foundation Physiotherapy & Wellness, we can be your partners in managing symptoms and maximizing quality of life.
Symptoms of Multiple Sclerosis
The symptoms of multiple sclerosis differ depending on what part of a person’s nervous system has been affected. Symptoms include:
- Persistent Fatigue
- Loss of strength and balance
- Changes in walking and gait
- Vertigo
- Dizziness
- Difficulty speaking and swallowing food/drink
- Incontinence and Frequency of the bladder
- Muscle stiffness and/or spasms
- Memory and cognitive issues
- Blurred vision
The frequency and severity of MS symptoms of MS can come and go. After a relapse, some patients may experience more disability and pain.
