How Our Team Can Help With Your Pelvic Health
Do you struggle to empty your bladder completely? Have you experienced leaking accidents when you cough or sneeze? You may be dealing with urinary incontinence. The good news is that at Foundation Physio, our healthcare providers offer a full-body approach to incontinence care. We treat various types of incontinence and can guide you towards lasting solutions.
Urinary incontinence, a condition involving loss of bladder control, most commonly presents as stress incontinence or urge incontinence (often referred to as an overactive bladder). Although it affects more women, men—especially after prostate surgery—are also impacted. And while many people believe incontinence only affects older adults, it can affect individuals of all ages and genders. Remember, incontinence is not a normal part of aging and can be effectively treated.
Our physiotherapists work alongside our other specialists at Foundation Physio to identify the root cause of your incontinence. By addressing the issue holistically, we provide you with the guidance and care you need to regain control!

Primary Causes of Urinary Incontinence
Our team understands that incontinence can arise from various factors, which can often be addressed through lifestyle changes and targeted therapy. There are many potential causes of urinary incontinence, including:
- Weakened bladder muscles resulting from pregnancy, childbirth, obesity, and aging
- Physical damage to your pelvic floor muscles from childbirth or surgery
- Damage to the nerves from delivery and health problems like diabetes and multiple sclerosis
- Enlarged prostate
- Types of cancer
Some types of urinary incontinence happen due to other reasons, like:
Medication
Urinary incontinence may be a side effect of medicines such as diuretics.
Caffeine
Caffeinated drinks may cause the bladder to fill quickly, leading to accidental leaking.
Infection
Urinary tract infections and bladder infections may cause incontinence.
Regardless of the causes, our integrated team has solutions that work for the different types of incontinence.

Understanding the Types of Urinary Incontinence
Urinary incontinence is any undesired leakage of urine and involves the pelvic floor muscles. The pelvic floor muscles attach to the bottom of the pelvic bones and form a supportive “hammock structure” that supports the internal organs. Here are the primary types of urinary incontinence:
Stress Incontinence:
- Leaks that happen when intra-abdominal pressure increases, such as when laughing, sneezing, playing a sport or lifting heavy objects.
Urge Incontinence:
- This accidental leakage occurs with a sudden, intense urge to urinate, often leading to leakage before reaching a restroom.
Mixed Incontinence:
- A combination of stress and urge incontinence symptoms.
Functional Incontinence:
- Leakage that occurs due to physical barriers, such as difficulty moving to the bathroom in time.
Urinary Frequency:
- The frequent need to empty their bladder throughout the day and night.
Incontinence affects twice as many women as men, often due to factors such as childbirth and menopause. Fortunately, we provide treatments that are effective for all genders.
Comprehensive Incontinence Treatments with Our Integrated Team
At Foundation Physio, we provide a full-body approach to treating incontinence starting by taking you through a thorough physical examination and comprehensive patient history. Our integrated team of physiotherapists, pelvic health specialists, and chiropractors work together to offer tailored treatments that include:
Pelvic Floor Strengthening:
- Using specific exercises and biofeedback to enhance pelvic floor muscle control and reduce leakage.
Manual Therapy:
- Soft tissue mobilization and massage of internal and external pelvic musculature to relieve muscle tension and provide pain relief. Our team may also perform spinal and sacroiliac joint manipulations to reset the neurological pathway, relieve pain, and restore normal spinal alignment.
Massage Therapy:
- Massage therapy around the hip, thigh and low back muscles can be effective in working with the surrounding musculature that may create tension and pain.
Therapeutic Exercises:
- Therapeutic exercises to restore the normal strength and endurance of stabilizing pelvic floor muscles and muscles in the low back and hips.
By combining these techniques, we address the root causes of incontinence, ensuring personalized care and optimal outcomes. Contact us to discover how our collaborative approach can help you regain control and confidence.

Get Your Orthotics Before the End of the Year!
Quality orthotics can alleviate pressure, eliminate pain, and promote stability. It’s important to receive custom orthotics that are created to fit the exact shape of your foot in order to receive the maximum benefits.
As physiotherapists and chiropractors, we are specifically trained in musculoskeletal movement and have extensive knowledge of gait analysis and biomechanics of the lower extremities. We can provide you with orthotics that uniquely fit the contours of your feet, giving you the maximum amount of function, support, and comfort.
The assessment starts with an understanding of your specific needs, followed by a gait assessment and biomechanical assessment of your foot and lower limb. Your feet will be cast using foam in a non-weight-bearing position. After the assessment, it will likely take a few weeks for your custom orthotics to come back from the lab.
You will be contacted for a fitting appointment when the orthotics arrive. Orthotics can be fine-tuned and adjusted for the proper fit at that time.

Our Patients Get Great Results
“I’ve seen three separate practitioners at this location (Vishnee, Ryan and Lesley) and they have been vital to treating the chronic pain and pelvic floor issues I struggle with. It’s taken me a long time to find a place that takes a holistic perspective where practitioners interact with each other to ensure continuity in care and I feel genuinely lucky to have found it. I highly recommend them as they seem to deeply care about living well.”
