I’ve heard of physiotherapy but I don’t know what it is. What is it?
Physiotherapy is a medical, hands-on approach to relieving pain and restoring function. Physiotherapists are medical experts in musculoskeletal and neurological conditions and work closely with physicians.
Our physiotherapists evaluate your movement patterns, identify the cause of your pain, and work to eliminate it.
While every patient’s condition and pain is unique, our physiotherapist will use a variety of gentle hands-on techniques, exercises, and equipment to relieve pain quickly and restore your function to optimum levels.
The overall goal is to restore pain-free mobility and function and to prevent the injury or pain from recurring.

Will my physiotherapy treatments be painful?
Physiotherapy is not meant to hurt, but to relieve pain. However, as you restore your mobility, pain levels, at times can fluctuate. You might experience some temporary soreness from using muscles that are weakened or recovering.
This is a normal response to therapy treatment. Good communication with your therapist will help minimize any discomfort. We want you on your way to quick pain relief and back to normal activities.
Are your physiotherapists trained to treat my condition?
Yes! Physiotherapists have years of university-level training in anatomy, physiology, kinesiology (study of joint movement), neurology, and are experts in human movement.
At Foundation, all our physiotherapists and massage therapists undergo a rigorous 24 week on-boarding and training program, taught by senior and lead physiotherapists with over 20 years of experience. This program covers assessment skills, manual therapy, special conditions, communication, exercise prescription and clinical reasoning. This ensures that, no matter who you see, you can trust that you are in great hands. Our team is also invested in regular mentorship, clinical case rounds and coaching with respect to specialized conditions or complex cases.
All Foundation associates are provided with professional development reimbursement to continue professional learning regardless of their years of experience!
Rest assured, you are in excellent hands – pun intended 😉
I want to schedule an appointment – how do I do that?
You can schedule by calling any of our locations, booking directly online, or requesting an appointment. Most of our locations are open Monday-Saturdays, with appointment availability early mornings and evenings to meet the demands of your busy schedule. We can’t wait to meet you!
What should I wear for my sessions?
Dress comfortably in clothes that allow easy access for the therapist to examine your problem areas.
For treatments, loose-fitting clothes that are comfortable for gentle exercises and supportive sneakers are often good choices to wear.
How long will each of my sessions last ?
Typically, the first session lasts for 1 hour. Each session after that may be 30 or 60 minutes. The amount of time will be based on your specific needs, and your therapist will discuss this with you.
How many times will I need to come in before I feel better?
“Feeling better” is very specific to your diagnosis and your goals. For example, the plan for the same knee ligament injury will be very different between a runner training for a marathon or a weekend athlete. But “feeling better” is not the end goal, living better is.
At the initial assessment, your physiotherapist will better assess your condition and discuss your goals. Based on that, you will be provided with a written or emailed plan of care, outlining how many sessions over how many weeks.
We like to break the plan of care into three phases: FEEL BETTER, MOVE BETTER and LIVE BETTER
The Feel Better phase usually takes 1-4 weeks. This is when symptoms start to resolve, pain is no longer limiting, and you start to regain movement for day to day tasks. Appointments during this phase are more frequent: at a minimum once a week. In acute, high pain or post-operative scenarios, the first two weeks may require two sessions a week.
The Move Better phase goes from weeks 4-8. This is when we introduce higher loads and repetitive tasks to ensure that symptoms stay away. This is also when we can monitor your progress as you return to higher impact activities such as sports and working out. Appointments during this phase are more spaced out: minimum once every two weeks or once a week, if progressing quickly. It is encouraged to keep contact and provide updates with your provider between appointments.
The Live Better phase goes from weeks 8 to 12…..to month 12! This is when we start to build a functional and holistic exercise program into your lifestyle, typically revolving around strength/resistance training. You typically check in once a month or every six weeks as an accountability measure. This is also a great opportunity to catch up, provide updates and progress!
Will my sessions be covered by insurance?
All of our healthcare providers are regulated and registered with their respective colleges. and are eligible for coverage through extended health benefit insurance plans. For services, such as custom bracing, custom orthotics, pillows or bracing, please check your plan prior to purchasing. It is your responsibility to ensure you provide your healthcare provider and client experience team with all the correct information shall your plan require, in order to be reimbursed.
How should I pay?
We prefer our clients to leave a credit card securely on file. Upon completion of your session, your card will be billed and we will email you the receipt. The receipt will contain all the information for easy uploading into your insurance portal for reimbursement. We also accept debit or cash if credit card is not an option for you. We can do direct billing, on exception. We do require a credit card on file for direct billing, in the case insurance payment does not come through.
How should I prepare for my initial appointment?
To bring on your first visit:
- A prescription (if needed) for physiotherapy from your referring physician
- FIll out the patient forms online In case of an automobile accident, also bring any case manager or insurance adjuster contact names, phone numbers, and claim number.
- Please arrive 15 minutes early to complete any remaining paperwork, so you can maximize your time in your evaluation.
- Please wear comfortable clothing that allows easy access to your problem areas.
Can I continue sessions even after I feel better?
Yes, once you have completed your plan of care, your therapist will encourage you to continue your home exercise and self care program. It is highly recommended to continue to check in with your physiotherapist monthly or bimonthly to be reassessed and progressed.
You can also continue with massage therapy, chiropractic or any of our other sport-specific or wellness related services.
