With the very warm weather during the Toronto summer comes the opportunity to train on sand at the beach. Here a few reasons why it may be a good idea to utilize beach workout as cross training for soccer. Musculoskeletal Reasons
- 1.6x more energy expended training on sand with no additionaladded strain on the body.
- Increase speed, explosiveness, stamina, balance, reactions, and agility
- Strengthen core, quads, hamstrings, and foot and ankleimportant smaller stabilizer muscles that may reduce injuries
Technical Reasons
- Improve first touch, ball control, shooting and ariel play
- Increase better spatial awareness, tactical awareness and faster decision making.
- Increase overall player comfort with the ball, especially in tight/ difficult situations
Injury Prevention
- Running on sand is lower impact on players joints and more energy is exerted than turf or grass and is therefore a great cross training option to minimize overuse injuries.
- Strengthening lower body stabilizer muscles, hamstrings, and core decrease chances for joint related injuries (ankle, knee) and hamstring tearing.
