Integrated Care for Gait, Foot and Ankle Problems
Our feet and ankles support every step we take. When foot, ankle, or gait problems develop, they can affect your balance, mobility, running performance, and overall movement patterns throughout the body. At Foundation Physiotherapy and Wellness, our physiotherapy-led team takes a full-body approach to foot and ankle care.
Physiotherapists, chiropractors, registered massage therapists, and pedorthists work together to assess how your feet connect to your knees, hips, and spine. This collaborative approach helps us address the root cause of discomfort, not just the symptoms, so you can move with greater confidence and control. Read on to learn more about common foot and ankle problems, preventative strategies, and how our integrated team can support your recovery and long-term mobility.
Common Foot and Ankle Problems
Foot and ankle discomfort affects many people. Repetitive strain, sudden injuries, changes in training volume, footwear choices, and underlying health conditions can all contribute. When left unaddressed, these issues may alter walking or running patterns and place added stress on other joints.
Plantar Fasciitis
Plantar fasciitis involves irritation of the plantar fascia, a thick band of tissue along the bottom of the foot. Many people notice heel pain with their first steps in the morning or after prolonged sitting. Strengthening the calf muscles and improving foot control can reduce strain on this tissue. Wearing supportive footwear, maintaining a healthy weight, and managing high-impact activity levels can also help.
Achilles Tendinitis
Achilles tendinitis develops when the Achilles tendon becomes irritated from overload. This condition can cause stiffness and discomfort at the back of the ankle. Gradual strength training, mobility work, and proper load progression are key to recovery. Footwear support and manual therapy may also help improve tendon function.
Ankle Sprains
Ankle sprains occur when the ligaments around the ankle overstretch or tear. They often lead to swelling, reduced stability, and difficulty bearing weight. Early, guided rehabilitation helps restore strength, balance, and proprioception, which is your body’s awareness of joint position.
Bunions
Bunions form as bony changes at the base of the big toe. Ill-fitting footwear often aggravates symptoms. Choosing shoes with a wide toe box and considering custom orthotics prescribed by a qualified pedorthist can improve alignment and reduce pressure.
Flat Feet (Pes Planus)
Flat feet involve reduced arch height, which may contribute to discomfort or fatigue during walking and running. Targeted strengthening exercises and supportive orthotics can help improve load distribution and foot mechanics.

Running and Gait: Why a Full-Body Assessment Matters
Runners often experience foot and ankle pain when training volume increases too quickly, footwear does not match foot mechanics, or muscle imbalances develop higher up the kinetic chain.
At Foundation Physiotherapy and Wellness, our team analyzes your gait, whether walking or running, to understand how your feet, knees, hips, and spine work together.
- Physiotherapists assess strength, mobility, and load tolerance.
- Chiropractors evaluate joint mechanics that may influence stride and alignment.
- Registered massage therapists address muscle tension and soft tissue restrictions.
- Pedorthists assess footwear and provide custom orthotics when appropriate.
When multiple team members collaborate, we can build a coordinated plan that supports optimal movement patterns and performance.
The Role of Foundation Physiotherapy and Wellness in Your Recovery
Our physiotherapists lead your care by conducting comprehensive evaluations that may include:
- Strength and Range of Motion Testing to assess muscle strength and joint mobility.
- Gait and Movement Analysis to evaluate walking and running mechanics.
- Functional Testing to assess how your feet and ankles perform during daily and sport-specific activities.
Based on your assessment, our team develops a personalized plan that may involve several practitioners working together to support your recovery.
Your care plan may include:
- Targeted Strengthening and Mobility Exercises to improve foot and ankle control.
- Manual Therapy Techniques to improve joint and soft tissue mobility.
- Neuromuscular Re-education to restore balance and coordination.
- Gait Retraining to improve walking and running efficiency.
- Custom Orthotics and Footwear Guidance when structural support is needed.
- Chiropractic care to address joint mechanics that influence lower limb loading.
- Massage therapy to support tissue recovery and reduce muscle tension.
This integrated approach allows each practitioner to contribute their expertise while working toward shared functional goals. Many clients experience improved mobility and long-term stability when care addresses the entire movement system rather than one isolated area.
Education remains central to your recovery. Our team provides guidance on footwear selection, activity progression, and strategies to reduce reinjury risk.

In a crowded healthcare market, it feels like you’re asked to make endless choices: Which clinic? Which provider? Do they have the experience for me?
We make that choice much easier for you.
Choosing Foundation means selecting a physiotherapy brand that is 100% owned and managed by healthcare practitioners. We care about clinical excellence and outcomes, FIRST.
It’s the commitment to our patients above all else.
👉 Evidence-based practice and learning are at the centre of our practices. You can be assured that, regardless of who you see, your practitioner is expertly trained and has years of experience and support guiding them.
👉 Associate tiers of our practitioners mean accessibility options for our clients, rewarding expertise within our team and sustainability of our practices.
👉 We genuinely want our clients to reach their goals and more. Outcomes are not a buzzword for us. It’s a core value.

5 Health Benefits of Spring Cleaning!
- Allergy Symptom Reduction. A thorough cleaning can greatly reduce the amount of dust in your home, which is helpful considering dust mite allergies are the number one cause of bronchial asthma in the world. About 3.8 million Canadians have been diagnosed with asthma. A 2014 study found that cleaning and decluttering your home can help you avoid allergy symptoms and make you feel healthier.
- Cleanliness Produces Happiness. Maybe you don’t enjoy the process of cleaning, but the end result will leave you smiling. A 2010 study found that having a clean home can improve your mood and reduce your risk of depression. Studies also show that doing housework for 20 minutes can reduce stress and anxiety by up to 20 percent.
- Better Heart Health. If you’re looking for an easy way to support your heart health, just 30 minutes per day of light exercise (including low-intensity physical activities like household chores, vacuuming, mopping, and scrubbing floors) can decrease your risk of heart disease by 24 percent.
- Declutter and Do a Good Deed by Donating. An essential part of a successful spring cleaning is getting rid of old items that are no longer used or worn. Apply the rule of thumb that if you haven’t made use of something in a year, it’s time for it to go. Fill bags and boxes of things, then donate them to a local charity so they can still be beneficial to someone else. Giving to others is an act that is associated with greater self-esteem, lower stress levels, and overall happiness.
- Get a Better Night’s Sleep. Do you have trouble sleeping at night? In a recent poll, it was found that people who make their beds are 19 percent more likely to sleep well on a regular basis. Clean sheets with a fresh scent impacted 75 percent of those individuals polled. See what a difference spring cleaning can make by cleaning the clutter from your room and sleeping on some fresh sheets.
