What is Pelvic Girdle Pain?
Pelvic Girdle Pain is an umbrella term used for all pelvic pain and includes pain from the lumbar spine all the way down to the front or back of the thighs, or the front of the pelvis (pubic symphysis). This pain is very common during pregnancy and it can range from a mild ache to a sharp, severe pain that interferes with daily activities. This pain can happen during any time of pregnancy, during labor, or even after delivery.

How is it Caused?
The cause of pelvic pain differs depending on the individual. Contributing factors may include muscle strength, flexibility and either limited or increased joint movement. Some people are at a higher risk for developing pelvic girdle pain. According to the research, the most common risk factors for pelvic girdle pain during pregnancy are:
- History of low back pain
- History of pelvic joint pain
- Past trauma in the pelvic region
- Poor muscle function in the back
- Poor muscle function in pelvic region
Symptoms of pelvic girdle pain:
- Discomfort with prolonged walking, standing or sitting
- Pain when climbing stairs
- Pain when transitioning from sitting to standing
- Discomfort while laying down in some positions or when rolling in bed
- Pain during sexual intercourse
- Discomfort during daily activities
- Difficulty walking
- Clicking or grinding sound in pelvic region
It is important to remember that not everyone’s experience with pelvic girdle pain will be the same. Symptoms can also fluctuate depending on activity level, stage of pregnancy, as well as the degree of fatigue or stress.
