Control your pain, and regain motion with the McKenzie Method (MDT)
If you’re dealing with ongoing back, neck, or joint pain, the McKenzie Method is a unique evidence based approach to determine the mechanical (movement related) cause of your symptoms, improve range of motion and reduce pain. This treatment method focuses on applying movement based treatments that are unique to your current movement pattern, in order to reduce your symptoms. Treatments are replicated with home exercises, reducing dependency on medications and allowing you to better control your symptoms.
At Foundation Physiotherapy & Wellness, we utilize components of MDT as part of our assessment and treatment approaches. Our co-founder, Raj Suppiah PT, is an MDT certified physiotherapist who coaches the team on how to integrate components of MDT into their practices.
What is the McKenzie Method?
The McKenzie Method, or Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy (MDT), is a comprehensive assessment and treatment protocol that starts with a rigorous subjective interview, followed by a movement based (mechanical) assessment. It’s particularly effective for conditions affecting the spine and joints, such as back pain, neck pain, sciatica, and issues in the arms and legs.
Key Components of the McKenzie Method
Personalized Assessment:
- Each patient undergoes a detailed assessment that involves specific movements to identify the patterns of pain related to spinal and joint conditions. This diagnostic process categorizes symptoms into manageable groups, which directly informs the personalized treatment plan.
Targeted Treatment:
- Based on the assessment, treatment can involve therapist assisted movements, and self management repetitive exercises designed to eliminate pain and restore function. Exercises are prescribed with the goal of improving movement, reducing pain and progressively increased each session.
Preventive Techniques:
- Education plays a crucial role in the McKenzie Method. Patients learn effective strategies to maintain proper movement mechanics, maintain joint and spinal mobility and prevent the recurrence of pain. This knowledge helps sustain long-term health benefits and reduces the likelihood of future injuries.
Advantages of the McKenzie Method for Spinal and Joint Health
Symptom Relief based on Function over Diagnosis
- The unique approach about the McKenzie Method (MDT) is its approach to treating the client based on their presentation, symptoms and movement loss (over a cookie cutter approach to a particular diagnosis)
- For example, you may be diagnosed with a disc injury, but have movement loss and pain in rotation. Your treatment would be different from someone who has pain with bending down.
Assessment
- Assessment is a key part of the process. Your pain threshold, load tolerance (strength), range of motion, and symptoms will dictate the treatment
Progressive Treatment
- As you progress, treatment methods (both hands on and exercise based) are progressed to improve your ability to handle more load (stressors such as sitting, lifting, physical stress on the structures)
Self-Empowerment:
- You will learn how to self-assess and manage symptoms when movements and progression to manage their symptoms independently
Non-Invasive Relief:
- Using your body’s natural movements, the McKenzie Method offers a safe alternative to surgery and medication. In many instances, surgeons themselves, will ask patients to trial a rigorous course of MDT prior to considering surgery.
Evidence-Based Success:
- This method has been proven effective for a wide range of musculoskeletal issues and is supported by extensive research.
Who Benefits from the McKenzie Method?
Individuals with acute or chronic back, neck, or joint pain are ideal candidates for the McKenzie Method. It is also beneficial for those experiencing symptoms that radiate to the limbs, such as numbness or tingling, which are often signs of nerve involvement.
At Foundation Physiotherapy & Wellness, the McKenzie Method is part of a wholistic approach to health care. Our team includes physiotherapists, chiropractors, and physicians, all working together to ensure a coordinated and effective treatment strategy tailored to your needs.
